Argentina
Argentina is located on the continent of South America. It is bordered by Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile. It is the 8th largest country in the world in land mass. Its climate varies from subtropical in the North, to sub polar in the South, with a temperate central region.
Argentina is a republic, just like the U.S. However, the Argentine government and police is largely corrupt. Crime is a major concern. Theft is a common problem. One veteran missionary we spoke with has been robbed 30 times.
Though not as affluent as the United States, Argentina has one the best economies in Latin America. Argentina is rich in agriculture; growing and exporting fruit, beans and grains. They are well known for their quality livestock, exporting leather goods and beef around the world. Argentina also has food processing, motor vehicle manufacturing and steel manufacturing industries. Overall, the Argentines are well educated, and highly skilled.
Much like the United States, Argentina is a land of immigrants. Of the 40 million Argentines, 85% are of European descent. Mainly made up of Spanish and Italian immigrants, it also contains large populations of Polish, Russian, French, German, Austrian, Portuguese, Greek, Ukrainian, Yugoslavian, Czech, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, English, Dutch and Scandinavian descendants.
There are also many immigrants from the Middle East. About one million Argentines speak Arabic. They are mainly from Syria and Lebanon. The largest mosque in South America is located in Buenos Aires. The fifth largest Jewish Community in the world is in Argentina.
The Asian population, though not very large, is significant. It is mainly made up of Chinese, South Korean, and Japanese. The African population is very small, but growing.
The majority of the people claim to be Roman Catholic, with 20% practicing. You could say the real religion is soccer. The Charismatics and cults already have a growing presence. There is a severe lack of the truth. People think their good works will get them to Heaven. We must reach them with the Gospel. We must teach them the truth of God’s word.
At the heart of Argentina is the capital city of Buenos Aires. It is called the New York City of South America. With a population of almost 14 million people, it is hard to comprehend the vastness of the city.
People come to Buenos Aires from all over, looking for work. In this city, there are people from every city and town in Argentina, every country in South America, and many countries around the world.
Our heart is to go into the southern, central part of the city, where there are almost no churches in a radius of 7 or 8 million people. We will evangelize the lost, start local churches, and train national leaders that will be able start churches in other parts of the city, the country, the continent, and other parts of the world.
We hope that Buenos Aires will become a Jerusalem, a place from which the Gospel can be launched forth. Our God wants all men everywhere to be saved. We have a burden for all peoples of the earth, but we are only one couple. Our vision is that ministering in the diverse city of Buenos Aires, we will reach Argentines who will reach Argentines, Paraguayans who will reach Paraguayans, Ukrainians who will reach Ukrainians, Italians who will reach Italians, Jews who will reach Jews, Asians who will reach Asians, and Africans who will reach Africans.
This is the heart of our God and it has become our hearts desire. Would you help us to get to the field? You can pray for us. You can support us financially. Do what God leads you to do. All of us must do more than what we are doing now. God’s command demands obedience.
